Day Eleven: Thoughts on David Rossi
The adjective I use to describe Rossi unlike the other men is this: under appreciated. Until recently, I had preferred Gideon to Rossi, considering Gideon is quite fascinating and Rossi is much more plain, but once I considered Rossi as a person in a real-life setting, I realized that I prefer him in Gideon’s place.
Like I said, Rossi isn’t the most exciting character on Criminal Minds, and that’s why he’s the least popular of the males. The characters tend to have extraordinary personalities, in one way or another. But Rossi, really, seems to be the most stable, probably due to his experience and the fact that he was happily retired for five to ten years.
The thing I love about Rossi is what he adds to team. Rossi, really, is the reason is why the team truly became a team. When Rossi was first introduced, it seemed like he was going to go down Gideon Boulevard, by being self-absorbed and disconcerting. Whether it was because of what happened in “Damaged” or because the writers decided that making a Gideon clone was a bad idea (maybe both), Rossi softened up and became a true part of the team dynamic. When Gideon was on a team, it wasn’t really a team. It was just Jason Gideon and the BAU Band; he took control of everything, and the team let him because he was one of the best profilers the world had ever known. Rossi, however, doesn’t have the same desire to be in charge. Rossi very openly realizes that it’s Hotch’s team, and Hotch is the one who gets to call the shots, if anyone. Originally, I think Rossi underestimated the current-day BAU team, but once he settled in, he realized they’re just as qualified as he is for the job. He lets the other members of the team explore their theories on UnSubs instead of doing it all for them. He tries to make it a group effort, because Rossi is more of a mentor than Gideon could ever hope to be, because Rossi truly wants the other members to grow. Rossi, being the caring person he is, will give advice to others whenever they need it, but often tells them, to paraphrase it, “I can’t make that decision for you,” because Rossi knows that’s the only way his fellow team mates can become better profilers and better people.
The other thing I love about Rossi is his universal wisdom. Gideon can profile a fucking broom (literally), but I feel like Rossi knows more about living than Gideon does. Rossi understands how people feel more easily, because Rossi is much more down-to-earth person than Gideon was, and Rossi’s lived through many of life’s pleasures and dilemmas. I’m doing a horrible job at explaining this point, but I hope you get the message.
I really hope they give Rossi a major storyline soon. I would love to know about his past, and I think that would make him much more popular with the viewers.
This is the king of all David Rossi appreciation posts.
